‘Creative Rights in AI Coalition’ calls on UK government to protect copyright

As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to revolutionise the way we produce, consume, and interact with content, a newly formed alliance is taking a stand to ensure that creativity and technology can thrive side-by-side.

The Creative Rights in AI Coalition, a broad-based group that brings together publishers, authors, artists, music professionals, specialist interest publications, unions, and photographers.

Their united goal?

To spur growth in both the creative and tech sectors by protecting copyright and establishing a fair, transparent framework for generative AI (GAI).

Three key principles

At the heart of the coalition’s message are three key principles for AI policy. These principles underscore the need for a dynamic licensing market and a robust copyright environment.

They also emphasise the importance of control and transparency for content creators, while envisioning a future that drives innovation and fosters long-term prosperity for the UK’s creative and tech industries.

The coalition isn’t just making a philosophical statement—it’s backed by the voice of the public. Fresh data from a YouGov poll commissioned by Reset Tech reveals a clear mandate from UK adults:

72% believe AI companies should pay royalties to creators whose text, audio, or video work trains AI models.

80% think AI firms should publicly disclose the source material used to train their systems.

These findings align with the coalition’s call for meaningful, future-facing policies.

Balanced innovation

If the UK aims to maintain its status as a global leader in creative output—an industry generating over £100 billion each year—then the coalition believes it must set a standard for balanced innovation.

Copyright protections, fair compensation, and transparent practices are not just ethical considerations; they are vital economic levers that can ensure both sectors flourish.

In a statement, the coalition notes that the UK has a unique opportunity to shape global standards for AI and creativity.

By building a fair licensing market and safeguarding the rights of creators, the UK can foster an environment in which both cutting-edge technology and brilliant artistic work thrive.

It’s a vision of cooperation, not conflict—one that encourages all players, from government policymakers to tech innovators, to contribute to a balanced and sustainable ecosystem.

Growth through well-structured licensing agreements

The coalition’s principles offer a roadmap for achieving that balance. They speak to creators’ need for control over their work, establishing trust through transparency, and incentivising growth through well-structured licensing agreements.

By adopting these principles, the government can help ensure that both creative and tech sectors continue to drive growth, delivering value to audiences and strengthening the UK’s position on the global stage.

With the Creative Rights in AI Coalition now assembled, all eyes turn to the government’s imminent consultation.

It’s an opportunity to set a tone of constructive partnership rather than contention.

“By embracing robust copyright protections, promoting fair remuneration, and demanding transparency, UK policy can help lead the way, ensuring that the next wave of AI innovation uplifts and honors human creativity instead of leaving it behind,” says Stephen Conmy, founder of Contenseo.
